I got into Adobe Flash this year as part of my multimedia computing course. I wasn't especially looking forward to this module, thinking we'd just be making adverts & stuff (which we have...), but just as the term's pretty much over (supposedly revising...), I can almost cobble together an old school game - wish we were taught this rather than the cruft. Rolling Eyes

So, my 1st game (updated here):

I certainly want to make more apps like these & become better with actionscript. I'll post them here when I have something, may even use it as a usability testing ground - would be good to get some feedback. Wink

Yupp Kuba, >150 is venturing into the realms of improbability. Highest I got was 148 & I'd guess I've played it more than you guys. Wink

Some pups are a good idea to even the odds as things get harder but I think I'll leave that for another (better) game. Just in case I get get bored & go ahead (lol), if you had to pick one pup, what would it be? Speed, increased fire rate, non-destructed bullet (rail), temporary slomo?

Holger, easily possible, kinda cruel tho. Twisted Evil Would you have a point removed, difficulty increased or just a set amount of ammo to start? Just curious. What a Face

Rail sounds great Wink that would make it a lot easier to score more points/avoid the asteroids as U just wipe them out from front of U with single shot What a Face guess it would make it possible to get score around 200 ^^] well, at least if pup lasts longer than just a single shot/is temporary for few seconds.

Hmm, i thought that a shoot and a hit is 1 point, a shoot and a miss -1 point.
But maybe it is a better idea to give a set of ammo what can be increased by collecting powerups.
It would be a little bit more interactive and not so strikt.

What do you think about a shild. If you hit an asteroid it breaks into two or more parts. If a fragment hit your spaceship it degrese your shild ? And maybe you can get extra points by eliminate all fragments.

Ok, so I'm very bored right now....



Added a rail-like pup where the bullet velocity & damage are doubled, going straight through one target & into the next - it was too easy with a continuous rail... Also added an ammo system where you start with 20 & have a 10% chance of gaining 10 more for each target hit. If you run out you'll have to stay alive for 10 seconds until ammo's released for you to collect.
Changed the levelling up a little once the rail is picked up, should be looking at scores well exceeding 150. Wink
Didn't make exploding asteroids or implement a shield - I'm all outa creativity right now. Rolling Eyes

Maybe I should increase that or relate it to how much you have? It's not fun if you don't miss but run out & have to wait around to pick more up... Another option would be to spawn enough ammo to keep you going but have asteroids drop some as a bonus... Bah, I'm done for today but it certainly needs some thought, lemme know what u think. Wink

On another note, how's performance? I had to redraw the asteroid so it was less complex & the particle explosions were another reason to limiting the rail to 2 kills - screen full of asteroids & explosions was sloooo. Crying or Very sad It's now fine on my laptop but it still runs slow on my Atom netbook...

Turned out that it was only slow on my netbook because I was using google chrome, the fast browser... Rolling Eyes

Well Chris, you should be happy, I raided Alien Arena & Nexuiz sources earlier, you may notice some sounds:



I took Kubas idea of dropping ammo after 10 hits in a row. I also expanded that to govern the pups too, of which there're now 3: speed, rail & shield. They are awarded in that order after a 50 hit streak. All are permanent but the shield which only covers your ass twice, 3 hits & ur dead.

Hopefully that's it for this little game, time for some Nex before starting the next one. Smile

I'm sure someone will easily break 200. It is possible to survive by hiding in a corner, just popping out to clear space to stay alive. Smile

The graphics look great too, sure beats Zombie Football Very Happy

Hehe, it wasn't just the sounds, I slowed the progression down a bit when you get the rail. Wink

Cheers Chris, I'm certainly happy with the explosions but things like the pups & ship could do with some work - not that that's gonna happen. What a Face

& damn! 196! Shocked If you don't miss the 1st 100 & get the rail, skill max's out ~175, if you don't manage to get the rail it's ~145.

Lol, I got 200 & guessed it didn't count - that's impressive. Cool

I noticed the shield didn't come in at 150, closer to 160 - I obviously forgot to not reset the count when a rail is removed from screen... Another pup tho scratch that just shouldn't happen, as long as it isn't the shield it shouldn't make a difference tho. What a Face
